A remarkable feat in golf is recorded from Biarritz. A ball was driven from tho tee, pitched fair into tho hole, and remained there, the distance being 200 yards. Tho Stratford Club's links will be opened on Thursday, and in answer to an Invitation courteously extended by the latest addition to the Taranaki golf clubs, several of the Ngamotu club's members will attend. Two of the inland golfers put in some practice on the New Plymouth links a few days ago, and showed good form. In Messrs Crawshaw and Wilson Stratford has two keen golfers. Mr Crawshaw is an allround sport, having represented 'thy province in cricket, and also having been a warm supporter of football. In Lancashire and Cheshire counties, England, there are 08 golf clubs, with a membership of about 5000 ladies and 7000 or 8000 men. It is estimated that £30,000 is paid annually in subscriptions, and £IOO,000 on the game generally in these two counties alone. Golf is at a discount in South Africa. An Australian paper says there is "plenty of enthusiasm, but little cash available for tho sport, so the 'royal and ancient' is temporarily bunkered," Whilst controversialists are comparing golf and cricket for boys, it should not !>c forgotten that, Whilst every gamo of cricket is played practically over the same ground—i.e., as near like a billiard table an may be -no two golf links are alike, ' and therefore the training for quick judgment as to the meeting of a difficulty, so essential for the making of a man, lies surely all with golf.
