WOIiKS COMMITTEE. The Works Committee met on Thursday night. Present : His Worship the Mayor (chairmun), urs. Collis, Ahier, Browne, Carter, and Clid. Messrs Wilson uiid CJixsy wrote with reference to tho verandah to Messrs ltowe ami l'aterson's buildings, declining to agree to the Council's requirement that the verandah shall follow the alignment of thu kerb.— It was decided that provided Messrs Howe and i-'aterson withdraw the letter sent by their solicitors the Council will ue prepared to re-open the question. it was decided that permission oe grunted to tho Taranaki Acclimatisation Society to attach a fish ladder to the woodwork, on tiio dam ut th.4 waterworks under thu supervision of tin- hnrough engineer.

The Council will view the old hospital building at Te llenui at an ear-'; iy date, if possible on Monday after- \ noon next. The attention of the ltailway Department will he called to the bad ! condition of Currie-street extension, J leading to the goods shed. The Department will further be asked to put uio crossing in Eliot-streot in a betuetter condition. FINANCE COMMITTEE.
At a meeting of the Financo Committee (present : His Worship the Mayor, and Crs. Ahier, llrowne, Carter, Clilf, Collie and Wood), it was cjecitled : 1. That the deed hypothecating debentures as security for advances on loan account be approved, and lor warded to tho solicitors for Uio bank .or engrossment (amount to be £22,000, interest to' be 5 per cent.) 2. That the Council, in anticipation of revenue, do borrow from its bunkers, the ilank of i\ew Zealand, irom time to time as required by way of overdraft on the district fund account tho sum of eight thousand pounds sterling (£800o), or any sum not exceeding that amount at interest not exceeding wix pur cent, per annum, such interest to be computed as from the respective, days Of the moneys being advanced by the bank, and to be considered as accruing from day to day, and to be payable jn demand, but unlets and until demanded, to be payuble on the lust days of March and September in each year, and to be turned into .principal on the balancing of the books on those days, and thenceforth to become principal and bear interest accordingly at the rates before sanctioned, That the moneys so to bo borrowed by way of overdraft shall redrawn out ol tho said bank by cheque signed by the treasurer, and countersigned by any two of the councillors from time to time appointed by the Council for that purpose, and every cheque so drawn anil so countersigned shall be a sulllciont authority to the bank to advance the amount named by way of overdraft to the Council with that amount. That the town clerk be authorised to undertake that the overdraft required is within, and shall be kelH within, the limit prescribed by section 104 of "The municipal Corporations Act, 1901." That the Mayor and each of the councillors be empowered to countersign cheques on the district fund account. The following progress payments recommended by tho borough engineer were passed McWiiliams und Andrews (intuke tunnel), £IOOO ; F. M. Grayling (King-street culvert)! including deposit, £2o(j 17s 3d ; M. McMunus (stone crossings), £;j 10s.
