The Christmas Carnival.
EXHIBITION COMMITTEE,
The exhibition committee met last night in the Municipal Chambers. 11l the absence of Mr Uoodacre, His Worship the Mayor was voted to the chair.
The secretary reported that the building committee had slightly uiodilied the plan of the building, making it 280 it x 240 ft. The idea was to have an arch of butter boxes over flic main entrance, The plans provided for a stud of 12 feet in height, with 24 feet at the ridges. Authority was given to the secretary to obtain the cost of the litho. plans of tho floor space, and submit the same to the linanee committee, who shall have power to act, After some discussion, Mr Carter gave notice to move that the resolution appointing a space committee be rescinded, and with a view to altering its constitution. Mr N. 11. Skinner, on behalf of the Maori village committee, delivered a report on the estimated cost of constructing tho villago ana getting the natives present, He estimated the cost of housing seventy natives for a week at The Maori people who would be present would comprise twenty old natives, who could give exhibitions of, flaxdressing, kit-iuaking, etc., these being drawn from the Ngamahanga hapu at I'uniho. Thirty nuaaic-atged people from the same hapu, citieily married couples ; and twenty girls, poi dancers, from Ivahui's people at Itahotu. The whole arrangement of the village would be left to \vi lvoniene, who could be entrusted with the 'arrangements. The village would consist of a large whare, four smaller whares, a marae or square, and tents for sleeping apartments, the whole to be enclosed within a high fence.
The report was adopted, and the Becretary will communicate with Mr Cray, at Hahotu. The native*, it is understood, will immediately go into training for hakas and poi dunces. Mr Tribe, for the musical committee, reported that the committee would be ablo to carry out it» duties, including the production of two operas by the New Plymouth o|>era Club for £l5B.
Consideration was deicrred, pending a further report. The Chairman reported tha» tli( dairy exhibits committee had not yet met.
Mr Alexander reported on behalf of the art committee. It was 'deckled that the committee consist of Mrs Arden, Miss Percy Smith, Mr #lnser, Hev. Bradbury, Mr H. Webster, Mr E. B. Kyndon, Mr VV. Webster ,> Mrs Munro, Mr N. Miller, Mr H. Coulson, junr., Mr C. Webster, Mr F. Messenger, Mrs W. 11. Skinner, Mrs Wood, Miss Devenish, Mi' S. IVrcySmith, Mrs 11. Weston, Mr 0. 11. White, and Mr L. W. Alexander. M-ajor JJoinpsey was asked to communicate with Major Lovcday, asking that a cadet encampment be arranged for that ,\veek.
It was deckled to open the exhibition on Boxing Bay, Dec. 27, am continue until Jan. 14.
On tho motion of Messrs Ambury and Bellririger it was decided that tho following committee be appointed to bring down a schedule —Maori village, Mr W. Skinner ; "art, Mr Alexander ; home Industrie's, Mr A. W. Wood; woodwork, Mr Tribe; iron and machinery, Mr Hollo ; soft goods, Mr Wilson ; dairying, Mr li. Cock ; manufactures, Mr M. Fraeer; and the chairman ox officio. EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE. The executive committee met subsequently. The chairman of tho Opumike Town lloui-d was added to tlie list of district agents. Mr Carter moved, according to notice, that the following allocations be made '—Swimming carnival, £IOO ; children's carnival, £IOO athletic, £270 ; Maori, £2OO ; band contest, £iioo ; marine excursion, £IOO ; musical, £IOO. The swimming vote was reduced to £SO ; the vole lor the children's carnival was hold over, as also was the suggested allocation for the marine excursion ; £3OO was voted for a two days' sports meeting ; £l5O for the musical committee, the hire of Lbo theatre being chargeable to tlve general committee ; Maori village committee, £2OO ; advertising, £2OO,
