SOUTHERN DIVISION The cup luatchoe in the Tarenaki southern division commenced on Saturday, in splendid weather There wore three senior games and four amongst tlio juniors. Opunakc seniors played on thei» own ground, the visitors being too Hawera representatives. The visitors had the best of the buck-play, but were not at home on the ground j Opunoke be,at the Hawera men la the scruuit. J. Hunter was the only man to score, and from a throw-in he registered a neat try tor Hawera. Tho game ended Hawera 3, Opunaka nil, the score fairly Bhowisg the strength of the combatants.
Patea journeyed to Okaiawa, where they suffered defeat by 18 to nil, the home team having all the best of it. Skynnie ;cored a try, Car- '' roll converting. Carroll also kicked a goal from a penalty, and) Adams potted two goals. At Manaia tho Waimate Club received a visit from tho Eltham sen- i iors, who scored a win by loiq points to three. Callaghan, late of the Stars, played a fine game at -full-back for. Opt*nako seniors on Saturday. O.Sullivan, the Okaiawa skipper, was unable to take .the. field on Saturday, and Is not expected to play for a few weeks. He will be needed when the team meet Eltham next week, as Eltham always storta off with a rush: On paper, and on. first performances, they can win the, cup every year, but the men simply won't practice. Consequently thejt novor do win the cup.
At Wellington on Saturday, OW Boys defeated seniors by a try ami • goal to a try (5 to 8). Melrose debated Wellington by 8 points (goal from a penalty. Petono beat Athletics by 48 points to nil, sweeping the field. Beckett, late of Stratford, scored one of the tries.
