HOME AND FOREIGN.
(Received April 29, 10.35 p.m.) I/JNHOX, April -2V. Mr Kitchie has been appointed chairman oi the Parliamentary Committee to inquire into the desire for any alteration hi the income tax system. The Shaw Savill Co. has declared a dividend of five per cent, and curried forward £2114. Mr Kenneth Amlesson, chairman of directors, presiding at a meeting of the Orient Pacific Co., stated that if the company did not obtain fresh mail contracts the loss would not'fie without compensation because the company would have less responsibility, greater lilwty of action, and be free from most onwous speed conditions and from the obligation to despatch a mail steamer fortnightly to Australia during seasons when there was no possibility of avoiding heavy loss. They would also be free to trade to ports from which they were now debarred, and drop others whero now they only call because they were compelled to do so. He added : That in a short while there might be strong reasons for desiring a continuance of the contract, provided payment was at all commensurate with the service. Still the contract might obviouslv be bought too dearly if it committed' the company to a certain lob's.
