Devon Street.
REQUIRKS MODERNISING. TUI3 BOROUGH ENGINEER'S SUGGESTIONS, The following paragraphs are taken from the borough engineer's fortnightly report :
' Having had the opportunity of seeing the principal street of' this town under its best and worst conditions, J beg leu,ve to suggest that steps should be taken to improve its condition. This can best be done by faking out the existing cobble-stone watercourses, and replacing them witn concrete channels similar to that laid down in Gover-street. Whatever advantages the cobblestone channels may possess, they are .fan and away coiKnteiil«alanced by their insfcmi tury condition ami unsightly appearance. The existing kerbstones are very good, and beyond being lined up in places need not be disturbed. Again, the storm water requires to be. conducted to properly constructed gullies mid piped from thence to the several outlets, doing mvjiy wil |, ,i u , oiwrilcti" pits existing at present. The Wlll -|, "I modernising Devon-street would not be expensive, and it could be made a progressive one by doing one section at a time as funds Incame available. It would enhance the value of properties fronting the street,, mid be a great convenience to the public generally, 'besides effecting a ' consi'deraWe Havipg in the matter of maintenance. When such portion of Devon-street had l*vn completed,-as was considered desirable, then some of the principal cross-streets could be taken in hand.
" A , very largv rjuiantity of sulfites water comes down Uroughumstreel in wet wcnttlhcr, and discharges in lo a pit in Devon-street. The old s.'wer in Hedon-street running full in heavy weather cannol take it, so that the water ,flo„ds the faolpath. This can very eaily be remedied by disconnecting from the sewer and running the water into Hie Mai%toluku stream by Mr •Jones' stable." The Works Committee decided that the engineer prepare estimates for providing concrete clwmnelling on both sides of Devon-street from Liar-det-street to Currio-s-lrcet. , The engineer was 'authorised to make proper provision lor carrying oil the stonn water from Devonsti cot.
