Personal Notes.
Sir Joseph Ward reached Dunedin from the south last evening, and proceeds to Christohurch to-day. The Mayor, Mr R. Cock, has received an intimation from Major-Gene-ral Bal.iington regretting that he will bo unable, owing to a prior engagement, to be present at the ceremony in St. Mary's Church on Thursday next. The death is recorded of a resident of long standing, in the person of Mrs E. Walsh, of Mount Edgeciijiibestreet. The deceased lady, who passed away on Tuesday night, at the age of 81 years, arrived an New Plymouth with her husband, who belonged to the 4!lrd Regiment, during the Maori troubles, and had lived here ever since. She is survived by her husband and a daughter, Mrs W. Ryan, wife of the well-known constable of Stratford, and two sons, Messrs.T. Walsh, of Stratford, and W. Walsh, farmer, of Cheai Road. In the course of a private letter written on board the steamer Langton Grange on February 16, on her voyage from Capetown to Muenos Ayres, Mr J. A. Kinsella, Chief Dairy Commissioner for New Zealand mentioned that he was much better in health since he started on the sea passage, -and felt q'uite a different man to what he. was when he came out of Capetown Hospital. There were 'between -10 and r>o stowaways on the Langiton Grange, which Mr Kinsella did not think spoke well for South Africa as a labouring man's country.
