Theatre Royal.

iMISK ]{()Sl,\A m/UK.MAN

Last evening Miss Rosina Buckman, a young New /oujund soprano, who has just returned from England, gave a concert in the Theatre Royal. This proved u pleasing treat. Miss lUickman displaying a very sweet voice, highly trained. Her softly modulated-tones and smooth sw<el notes, especially in llie upper ami middle registers, showed that her talents ha\e been well developed, her voice in the upper registers being pari iculai I,\"* s\\ eel, clear, tlexi'blle, and of g'ood volume. Her various numbers were rendered with oxquisitive feeling, this ,\oung songstress having learned to enter into sympathy with the words of the numbers under treatment, ami New Zealand may well be proud of her success. The opening song was Gounod's "Jewel! Song" (from Fuust) with introductory recitative aria and air, and this rathe? difficult song was given in a vgry finished manner that won for the colonial cnntatrice hearty applause, a tribute, by the way, that was repeated every time she appeared. " Slower betters " (Willebey), " Three Green Bonnets " (dTJardelot) and '"Ballad of Kisses " (boniervllle) were sung a little later v/ith delightful naivete. The versatility of the singer wa« shown by her clever and sympathetic rendering of " Softly Sighs " from Dor Frieschutz and "Carmenita " a pleasing composition with pretty waltz refrain, by Lane-Wil:;on. Encores were demanded, and to these requests " The Cuckoo," "Banks of Allen Water," and at the conclusion a repetition of a portion of " Curmenita" was given. Mr Hamilton Hodges was loudly applauded for Iris rendering of Bluniunthars cavatina " Across the Fur Blue Hills, Marie," and "Thy Foe " by the some composer. "Mrs Uueneo, a gifted pianiste, was encored for her splendid playing of Kubenstein'rt " Staccato Prelude," and also supplied the accompaniments. As a flautist Mr G. S. Poole made a most favourably impression, treating ".La (.Jerrito " (Briceialdi) in a masterly manner. A treat was afforded by the promising child vocalist, Miss Clarice Buckman, whose numbers gained hearty approbation.
