A MEETING OF PROTEST. ! SYDNEY, March 80. , A large meeting in the Town Hull, the Lord Mayor presiding, adopted resolutions emphatically protesting against the wholesale* importation of Chinese into the 'Transvaal, and recording appreciation oi the clTorty of the Commonwealth Ministry, and the Federal Labour Party and the Democratic ! Party in the British Mouse of Commons in endeavouring to prevent such unjust competition against the interests of the local white workers. Air John Norton, of Sydney Truth, was the duel' speaker. He warmly denounced the proposal and said that all praise was due to Mr Seddon lor being the very first to protest against this retrograde step. ! The Minister for Works said ho joined heart and soul in the protest. Jle was pleased to see the stand taken hy Mr Heddon, who, in his opinion, was the biggest man in Australasia to-day.
The following cable was read from Mr Seddon : " Delighted to heal' of the anti-Chinese meeting, and earnestly 'hope, even though too late, that the voice of reason may prevail against the threatened disgrace and disaster to the Transvaal and Empire.*
It was decided to send the thanks of the meeting to Mi* Seddon, Mr Reakin, the Leader of the Federal labour Party, and the English opponents of the proposal.
