ATTENDS A NATIVE MEETING UN EAST COAST. (Per Press Association.) KUATOkI, March 18. A meeting of the natives was formally opened on Tuesday with taugis in memory of the lule Tamahan Alahupuku (the Wairarapa chief) and Hon. Henare Tomoana, M.L.C. in the evening native land law and council business was 'discussed. The Governor and party arrived in the afternoon after a rough journev owing to the state of the loads," and were received with a great demonstration of welcome. The meeting opened on Wednesday, about 1000 natives being present. Most of the leading chiefs spoke. The Governor made a very practical and impressive speech, and his visit to the different tribes will do an immense amount of good. In his speech his Excellency dealt with the practical side of the native question. The Governor left at 4 p.m. for Whakatane. The councils met next day. Most of tho leading chiefs spoke, and the Governors speech was well received
