The Colony's Defence.
A ROYAL COMMISSION OF INQUIRY WANTED. '(.Per Press Association.) CHRISTOHIRCII, March 18. About 150 persons attended the public meeting held this evening to consider the state of the colony's defences. The speakers were the Mayor (Hon. 11. Wigrnm), Hon. C. C. Bowen, Messrs 0. Laurenson and W. W. Tanner, M.'sll.K. Mr Laurenson criticised the defences of Lyttel- ■ ton very severuly, saying iliut the annaments were q;uite obsolete and practically useless. A motion that in view of the present position of affairs in Kut'opi! and tin- East the meeting urges the Government of the colony to strengthen its defences, more especially witli regard to the principal ports and coalfields, was rejected, and the following motion carried : ••That the mating is of opinion thai tlie Government should appoint a Royal Commission to inquire into the state of the colony's defences.' '■
