Riflemen at Trentham.

SATURDAY'S. SHQOTING,: (Per Prees Association.) TttENTHAH RANGE, March 0. Shooting on Saturday morning commenced in a slight drizzle. Colonel Collins decided to take the 200 yds range of the Canterbury Match, rather than spoil any chance the men .might have by firing at the 700 yds distance of the Wellington Match, (he first range of which imd been shot the day previously in heavy rain. The Canterbury Match was interesting as being the iirst of matches, apart from the rapid firing, in which the use of accessories was disallowed. Crqat curiosity was expressed on the range as to how inou who Habitually used orthoptics would shape •when they had to lire without them, i The shooting from the start wus very hot, two possibles being rung on at 2Uoyds, while <M'h and li.'J's were quite common. The younger shots fired with grout confidence, and the shooting all round wus good. As there was no wind during the great part of tiie shooting at this range it wus considered hardly u fair lest, us men who are in the hubit of using accessories claim that with any wind the men firing with "V" and Government "lilies" would be handicapped against those using verniers and veutometers. The shooting compared favourably with that at 20Uyds on the opening Uay. At the oOUyds the wind freshened, and some of the men were rather upset by it ; but here a gain the shooting was very hot, fontpossibles being atKnired. The advocates of accessories looked to (iOOyds to bupport their theory ; but 'the possible was got by Lance-Sergt. Armilage, whilo young Sanford by the aid of 34 ■equalled the total made by Ching in the Auckland Match. Several oi the men did break up, but considering the puffy character of the wind and the shifty light this was not surprising, and it is doubtful if they would have done any better with accessories.

After lunch the 700 yds range of the Wellington Mutch was taken, and there all accessories were ullowed ; hut the wind blew stronger and was very variable, so that many or the marksmen had great difficulty in rinding the bulls-eye and keeping it when found. Several fair scores were made, but the shooting was far bohind than in the same match last your.

The Otago Match, 000 yds and 700 ydß, whieh will be fired later, will be closely watched as giving a greater Indication of what can be done without accessories at long ranges.
