THE ADDRESS-IN-REPLY DEBATE. LONDON, Feb. 5. The debate on the is proceeding. Mr J«hn Redmond's declaration that tihe Nationalists, in acceptingthe Land Act, did not accept it as an alternative to Home Rule elicited the rej;ly from the Right Hon O. Wyndtiam (Chief Secretary for Ireland) that the measure was passed exclusively as ai sense of duty and would be shortly amended so as to make everything within the Act clear. Hie Government was unable to initiate a Catholic University unless there was a common agreement There was already a marked tendency towards such am agreement. Mr Wynd-ham emphatically negatived the demand for Home Rule. Moreover under Home Rule, Ireland would have been unable to meet the fintmP r W>sions of the Land Act of IUO3. There were already 135 agreements made, embracing 3070 holdings and involving advances of a million and a half.
The siAject was ultimatelv dropped after Mr Redmond had passionately protested against the refusal of selfgovernment in Ireland.
PROSPECTS OF TRADE.
(Baoeived Feb. 5, 10.7 p.m ) LONDON, Feb. 5. Earl Wemysg, in the House of Lords, has given notice of a motion 1 in favour of the appointment of a Royal Commission to inquire into the prospects of trade. The commission will also consider whether anv change is necessary to further improve the country's trade.
