Caraless Producers.

The advent of the Chinaman in South Africa might not be a bad thing after all as far as New Zealand is concerned. The race is alleged not to be over particular, and they might "do to sell the mouldy New Ztealand cheese that Mr Gow declares is being exported by this col°"i Africa. At all events, it is extremely probable that no self-re-specting white ni a n will eat it if the Trade Commissioner's description of the article is correct, and the next best thing is to try it on the Chinaman. Apparently, while we are subsidising ships to carry our carg'o to Africa, and spending our money in endeavours } o open up a new market, the producer for whose benefit we ai-e doing all this is doing nothing for himself. "The cheese," says Mr Gow, "arrives at the warehouse with a largo percentage of the eases in a filthy condition, and manv of them smashed." While Mr ICinsella points out " tliiat, to a practical "•an, New Zealand is only damning her trade by sending her produce to a new market in such a condition." We seem to be a helpless, spoon-fed community. Until the Government gi aded our butter and meat we sent it Home in any condition, and until the Government takes steps to see that our butter and cheese reach South Africa in a proper state, the same sort of thing will keep on happening. Meanwhile some other country will grab the South African market.—Truth.
