Teachers' Appointments.

Some observations were made by Mr Hogg, M.H.K., at the meeting of the Wellington Education Board, in condemnation of the present system o! -dealing with pupil-teachers who im\e passed their examinations and qualified fur promotion. Young women had to work hard, lie said, lor these examinations, and when these were passed, and they had qualified themselves to become teachers, they were discharged in older that the Department might save a few miserable pounds. Many of tfiese young women were in poor circumstances, and thv-se \wre discharged, not because tihere was no room for their abilities, but in order to make '"ooni for other young teachers. He denounced siucli a system, saying that parents ought to be warned that in putting their -daughters to this work they were simply mining their chance in life. On the motion of Messrs Hogg and Field, a resolution was passed as follows : —"The Board is of opinion 1,1 tat the dismissal of pupil-teachers who have passed their examinations and qualified lor promotion s-houkl be avoided by their continuance in employment as ex'-puiMl-teachers, until such time as they are alTonded an opportunity of lilling other positions ; that where the service is terminated at t lie end of the year, they should be paid for the time occupied by the usual Christmas and New Year holidays ; anid that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to tire Minister for j Education."
