Russian newspapers declare that Japan demands seventy-two million roubles compensation ior war expenses, and ridicule the childish' simplicity of 'U s-avage nation. The Daily Mail says that Japan has pressed Russia for a prompt reply, intimating tihat other action would be taken in a very lew days if tho delay continued. The Times states that a reply is expected at Tokio on the sth inst. The Japanese do not anticipate solid coitfessiojis, as Prince Alexiefl's influenae still preponderates amd he energetically opposes concessions on essential points, recommending tliut nvar is preferable. High military officers hold the opinion that war is inevitable.
