The Daily News. THURSDAY, JANUARY 7, 1904. LATE HON. W. C. WALKER.

The colony is a distinct loser by the ajOToxincod on Tuesday, of Hon. W. C. Walker, Speaker of the ; Legislative Conrncil. resign in favour of Mr Seddou, who was ■allele to devote more energy to this, one of the important departments for the welfare of the colony. Ho was, at the Opening of the last session of Parliament, elected Speaker of the Legislative Council, his long experience and ripe judgment fitting- him admirably for this position. Very keen regret will he felt ut his sudden death, as in tllne lute Hon. W. C. Walker New Zealand has lost nn honest and consciuntiotis man, ever striving lor the public good.

THE FORTHCOMING CONFERENCE. Wu undersUuKl that it is the intention of his Worshiji the Mayor, at the , Uoroujjh Council meeting on Monday gight to move in the matter of making provision for the entertainment of the delegates who will attend the conference of the Australian section of the World's .Student Christian Federation, which commences on January 20th, and of which we furnished particulars in yesterday's issue. His Worship righ-Jy conceives that there is a great opportunity for advertising our town. i'ltae, visitors, professors l and students, hail from all parts of the colonies, and after the conference will return to their various homes. Whether they leave with good or bad opinions ttf our town, its people, and hospitality is a niatteir rests with the people themselves, und should interest'them greatly. It has 'been suggested that a public reception be uccorded t!no delegates. This is an excellent idea- The function might take the form •ol a g|arden party in the Recreation ({rounds. What better or more plduSing introduction to New Plymouth than an afternoon in these beautifully picturesque grounds ? Besides, in alrraUfeling such a function wo would have the assistance of tho ladies, and. wo know from past experience that when ladies in this town take up a matter of tin's nature the function is always a success. For a reception, then, here is the very, idea- Some forms of entertainment and recreation will bt needed dur-i ing tho week of the conference, and we understand that in this matter the committee of the Ministers' Association, which is making arrangements, intend to invite public assistance. Time is short, us there is only a fortnight ljemaining. and after Monday evening the Council will have, ta little over a week in which -to make arrangements for tho entertainment and reception of tho visitors, who will represent some of tine best and brightest intellect.
