(By Cover Point.) The feature of the first test match was the innings of Foster, who kept his wicloet intact till he reacted bbe iecord score for a test match of 287. We have to> go back nineteen years to find anything approaching this ifcore, when Murdoch scored 211 at Kensington O/vial in August, 1844. The total of the Englishmen's first innings has otaly once been excelled in the series of test matches, viz., at Sydney in DecemIber, 1894, when the Australians scored 58(3 agtmist Staddart's team, UKi|ug|h this gU'giantic score was iwsiuflicient to prevent Engjleind winnttiy by 10 runs. In that mutch Sj<d. Gregory scored 201 and 16, and he is the cmly Australian player who tootk part in that maitch anid tlie one just concluded. Syd, I am told, is playing as well as ever, and bis fie Ming is still of the marvelous character which electrified England when Home in '9l. He is now 33 years old, amd is still one of the first fc#ur to be picked when selecting a "rep." team. The match eridod in a victory for England, who thus secure the first "leg" -towards the recovery of the "ashes." Veterans' team play a town club eleven on Ja/n. 7 in the 'Recreation Ground.
I'n the loatcjj Wairoderers v., Waitara an Thursday, Waitara went to the wickets, scoring 120, of which Knight made 37, and the. veterata Jim Sarten a well compiled 18. The WKnderers mafde 72 for seven wickets, and the match will be continued oto some future 'date. The bowhtag of the Wanderers was badly maimgwd. Brajuud, wiho was in gi-eat form, haid amialyais as follows : —'l on avers, 6 maidens, 6 nuns 2 wickets, when he was taken of! and Steeds put on. Waitalra relished the change and pasted Steeds merrily. ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS
F.F.—As provision is ' only iua>ie lh the rules for a one, two awd three days' match, Warner's contention woe that the three days' stipulation applied.
W.—Certainly Trumper, Hill and Duff are not the three best batsmen in the world. They are, in my opinio*!, amongst the leaKttog bfetsmen in the workl.
D.G-.—Foster's innings is the highest yet made in test matches, iliuidouh previously held the record —2ll, maide nineteen years ago. lyironuaims.—Rule 12 says, "If t/he bowler shall bowl the bail so high over or so wide of the wicket ttnoit, in the opinion of the umpire, it is not within reach of the striker, the umpire shall call 'wide ball.' " My opinion is if one were playing on mattimtg, aipd the ball was pitched fairly straigjht, airtd from a fault in the matting the ball went wide of the wicket, I should uot call it wide. If playing on turf, certainly it should be called "wide." Pitch.—Rf E. Ooster was born April 16, 1878. He was educated at Malvern and Oxford University, aired plays {oi Worcestershire. He first played for his county in 1899,
