Obituary.
HERBERT SPENCER. LONDON, Dec. 8. The death is announced of Herbert Silencer, author, aetat 811. Herbert Spencer was born at Derby in 1820. He was educated by Iris father, a. leuuher of mathematics at Derby, and by his uncle, a clergyman and wrangler. Spencer followed the calling of a civil engineer and subsequently devoted hini.self to litorciry and journalism, bai'ivg for live years sub-editor of the Economist. His hrst work of importance was "Social Status, or The Conditions Essential to Human Happiness Specified, and the First of Them Developed," and appeared in 180 l In 18.)., appeared the "Pr, !,•-,,des 0 ' IVycology," and in J .SO 1 •■ k ;. , at,on -Intellectual-. Moral and Physical " which obtained a very large sale and has been translated into many languages, the most recent being Sansml In .1882 he Msitcd tbe\„iu.«i States. Among his other important works are: - "Hrst Principles," nncples of Biology." ■■Principles ol Sociology," "Principles 0 , EUI . ics, "Study of Sociology Fs says," and "The Man Versus file State l„ 1 «)o- Mr Spencer issued a small volume of "Facts and Comments ' and i„ t h e prHace . lllllount . Ed that this would be his last volume. He finis-lied his autobiography several years ago, but left its publication to his executors. Mr Spencer always declined to accept academic and other honours.
