The Takapuna sailed from Onehunga at 3.45 yesterday afternoon for New Plymouth. The Canadian Government has recently equipped one of its vessels—the steamer Eureka—with a bralte intended to act as a check to the speed of the vessel, and it can also bo utilised in turning about in a limited shipway. During a recent trial in the River St. Lawrence, near Morftreal, the steamer was driven ahead at an indicated speed of 11 knots an hour. Steam was then shut off. and simultaneously, the brake on each side was opened. The steamer cams to a full stop within a distance of her whole length. The brakes were then closed, the vessel sent ahead until the original rate of speed was attafaed, when the engines were reversed, and the brakes opened, with the result that all headwny ceased after she had gone but 50ft, half her whole length. In manoeuvring the Eureka at full speed she was turned also within her whole length with one brake- thrown open. An examination of the brake and hull after the tests showed apparently no harmful strain or other damage, and in operating the brake no jar or vibratidh was observable by those on board.

On June 30 last there were 57 ururships, of .'519,700 tons displacement, in course of construction in the United Kingdom. Of this number 12 vessels were being built in the Royal Dockyards and 4o in private yards.
