Lost in a Fog.
LEADING DUNEDIN CITIZENS MISSING. (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, .Dec. 7. Intimation has been received that three well-known Dunedin gentlemen have been lost in a log at Hock and Pillar, Central Otagio. They are Messrs Mattews, State Forester, Alex. Bathgate, solicitor, and George Fenwick, managing' Director and editor of the Otago Daily Times. They left Gladbrook station at 9 a.m. on Sunday to go to the top of the Rock and Pillar, and weiv to return at 6 p.m., but did not 'do so. A thick fog came upon the ranges, and this, no doubt, was the cause. This morning the constable at Middlemarch and a shepherd went up the Rock and Pillar, but the fog was still thick and t'hey could not see more than a chain in front of them, and they were unsuccessful. Mr Eliot, manager of Gladbrook, organised a search party of six who know every inch of the ground, and they went out late in the afternoon. Steps are being taken to send out big search parties at daybreak. A special tram leaves Punodin at 8..'50 with Messrs T McKenzie, M.H.R., J.J. Ramsay and others, who will join the search party at Middlemarch, while another party leaves Hyde to search the range from that side. Mathows invaniaib'ly carried a compass? and it is not likelt the party are in serious trouble, but as one may have met with an accident energetic steps are being taken.
