Ngamotu Golf Club.
OPENING OF THE SEASON. There was beautiful weathor on '-ami-day aiterneon lor the closing of the goli season, and u very laige n'iiiiloi' incnt'cis ami friends, ladies and geriileiNt'ii, attended on the Ngamotu Club's lingij. A prognmane of golfing contests had been arranged, and with the very favourable weather conditions there were good entries' and splendid competition. The most interesting event of the day wa§ the approaching and putting oompetitiom, though its exciting linale was not viewed by many of the members as the hour was late when fortune smiled upon Mr Steed, who was playingi off a tie with Mr R. Bayly, the popular captain of the club. Quite a feature of the arrangements was the ample afternoon tea provided by the ladies, who seemed bent on excelling themselves. The programme contained an event of a totally different nature to contests, and one that spoke heartily of the good feeling existent among the members. One of the most enthusiastic lady gosi> rs of the season |was Mrs A. J. Edmunds, secretary to the ladtes' committee and very suctessful and popular on the links. The club is unfortunately losing her as L member, as she will shortly leave New Plymouth for Opunake, and her fellow-members seized upon this opportunity of giving her a present as indicating their appreciation of her efforts as secretary to the ladies' committee, aifd also of the friendship which they felt for her as a lady and a golfer. the course of the afternoon Mr Stamlish, President of the Cluto, took occasion to address those present, presenting to Mrs Edmunds, on behalf of the lady members, a very handsome leather writing-case, with a silver-plate bearing the inscription :—"Mrs A. J. Edmunds, from ladv members of tke Ngamotu Golf Club, 5/12/03." He jocularly remarked that it was usual in cases like this to diink_ the health of the departing (juest in something stronger than tea, but the usages of golf precluded any BUch ceremony as that.- He assured Mrs Edmunds of the .regret felt at her departure and of the members' good wishes for Her future health and happiinees, and concluded by making the presentation. Mrs Edmunds briefly thanked members for their handsome gift. Mr Cock, the Mayor, took this opportunity of publicly thanking Mrs Edmunds, on behaK of the people of New Plymouth, for the very grea.t interest shown in social affairs, and for her very valuaMe assistance in assisting the .various functions in aid of public institutions. He mentioned' that whenever a ladies' meeting was callad for the purpose ef assisting with the Recreation Grounds or any other local institution or charity Mrs Edmunds was always ready, willing and anxious to give her time and energies in the direction indicated, and in this capacity she had proved of great aupistanceto himself and Mrs Cock. In again thanking Mrs Edmunds he expressed the opinion that as Opunake was not so very far away they might again be enabled to have her coilnsels to help them out of any future difficulties. The programme was then continued with the following results : Men's Approaching and Putting.— Mr A. H. Steed 1, Mr R. Bayly 2. It* the first competition Mr Steed and Mr Bayly each secured the hole in seven strokes for the two distances and it was decided to play off after other other events had been concluded. The next, time, and theliext, they again scored equally, amid much enthusiasm from those who remained to see it through. Then Mr Steed got a good stroke and Jfr Bayly an equally unfortunate one, with the resnlt that Mr Steed was adjudged victor amidst hearty applause. Ladies' Approaching and Putting, i—Miss G. Stanford 1.
Ladies' Driving.—Miss Stanford 1. Men's Driving.—Mr W. E. Spencer 1, Mr G. H. Morgan 2.

'A handsome tray became the property of Mr D. K. Morison for his victory in the handicap singled. MrsEdmunds was the winner of the putter presented by Mr W. Weston for ladies' singles, and the ladies' challenge medal for singles, carrying a prize of a silver vase was w*n by Miss Rcid. For mixed foursomes, prize presented by Mr Stansfish, Mrs Edmunds was 'the most succMßful competitor, playing with Messrs Bayly, Mannering, and We»ton, while Miss Deacon won one competition with Mr Fitzherbert. A bag presented by Mrs Baldwin was won by Miss G. Shaw, and Miss Stevenson won the ladies' bogey competition. Misses E. Hawken and J. Pay ten secured the consolation prizes, and Milt.
