Central School Committee.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Town School Committee was held on Monday evening in the Town Hall. Present—Messrs W. A. Collis (chairman), S. W. Jackson, T. Freethy, , F. Pepperell, A. (i. Cattrum, Rev. W. I{. Woolley, P. J. H. White, Thos. White, and F. Okey, A letter (inter alia) was received from the Board In connection with the revised scale of salaries as provided by the Public School Salaries Act, 1901, on a portion of the stall at the Central school.

Mr Dempsey attended at the request of the Committee, and gave his views on the matter. Resolved unanimously:— "That this Committee, recognising the difficulty of securing a suitable second assistant at £l3O a year for a school of the importance 0 f the Central, recommend that a pupil teacher—a junior—b;e dispensed with, and the £3O thus freed be added to the salary of the second assistant." Resolved "That the Committee would respectfully call attention to the inadequate salaHes paid to second assistants in such schools as th# Central, New Plymouth, under the revised scale, and would suggest the advisability of the Board drawing the attention of the Education Department to this aspect of the question, the scale of salaries being in the opinion of this Comumifrtee utterly inadequate to secure the services of competent assistants."

Resolved " That this Oommitte* regret the discussion of the Board re school at Vogeltown, as conveyed in its letter of sth inst., and would express the opinion that steps should at any rate be taken to secure a sit#."

Messrs F. Okey and A. G. Cattrum were appointed as the visiting committee for the ensuing month. A sub-committee, consisting of the Chairman, with Messrs (i. W. Jackson and P. J. H. White was set up to arrange details, for entertainment in aid of the school funds.

The rest of the business was of a routine nature, and of no public importance.
