Tongaporutu.
(From Own Correspondent.)
Tongaporutu has a Cricket Club now—two I should say—an upper and a lower. They played a match on the 13th in Mr A. Wafers' paddock. There were very few onlookers. There was a school picnic on the beach t'he same 'day, and the majority went there. The day was tine and the outing very pleasant, a huge crowd, young ared old, going. There were eatables in abundance, and sports of every kind which were keenly contested. There was a eoncert and dance in iftwi school at night and the attendance was a record one. The people did not disper.ee till five the next morning. The spring has been very fine and stock and grass are looking well. The roads, too, are fairly good, although a few places are not dry yet. Ijast autumn papa mud was cleared off the main road, and sandstone put on, which greatly improved bad iil-aces. Now the imi'l and all
rub'Wsh on the roa'd-si'de is put on to the centre, with papa stones a/bout the size of prize turnips to bind the whole. The Mimi side of the mountain, from 37 to :i-j has been ticated to this, and the road is dirtier than it was in winter.
