The Meat Export Trade.
The prospectus of the British-New Zealand Meat and Produce Company has been issued (says the Christchurch Press). -The share capital is £150,000, with power to increase, in £150,000 shares of £1 each. Of the total, 75,000 shares are offered to the public of New Zealand for subscription at par ; 50,000 will be offered' for subscription in Great Britain. The prospectus points out that large profits have been made, and are still being made, for tiro sale of New Zealand meat in the United Kingdom, and that the deservedly good name of New Zealand mutton and lamb is in danger of being lost by the substitution of inferior meat, which is largely sold as " Prime Canterbury." A j.iumber of Homo retail shops notoriously sell inferior meat as the produce of New Zealand for tho additional profit thereby gained. The company will act as colonial and London agents for producers when so desired, and it is proposed to open a good class of retail shops, to cater for a better class of trade than is done at present. Operations will be commenced in a moderate way, and they will be extended as the demand justifies. The New Zealand Government have recognised the importance of this subject, and have contemplated taking the matter into their own hands, but tniey will no doubt welcome the opportunity of leaving the solution of the question to private enterprise the company propose acquiring the patent rights of the Smethurst and Chapman defrosting apparatus, in return lor which the patentees aw to receive fully paid shares.
