RAILWAY TIMETABLE. FIRE AND INSURANCES A largely attended meeting of the above Association was held at the Town Hall on Tuesday evening, Mr! Hal Goodacra presiding. The following resolutions were pissed: Proposed by Mr Carter and seconded by Mr White : That this meeting is of opinion that the proposed 5.25 train is not advantageous, and that no change] bti nude in pres-. Nt time of departure from New JfJym;ulh, viz., 4.25, and would request that this train be run through to Patea, Proposed by Mr Ambury B nd seconded by Mr Bennett: That this meeting is of opinion that the proposed 1.20 train should leave at 2 pm,, as this would enable those wishicg to do business and requiring to return uarly to da so. The proposed alteration giving three hours in which to transact business, would be a great convenience to tbe public. Proposed by Mr Bennett and seconded by Mr Ambury: That this meeting is of opinion that the traiu leaving Hawera at 7 30 a.m. should leave Patea at 6.30 a.m., arriving at Now Plymouth at 10.30. Proposed by Mr Blyth and seconded ty Mr Neal: That this meeting is of opinion thit the train arriving at 9.55 p.m., following as it does the mall train, is of very little use to the traveling public, and will therefore probably run at a loss to the department, and would recommend that the train leaving Wanganui at 6 a.m. run through to New Plymouth, instead of miking Stratford its terminus, as propossd ; and consider that the alteration would t>e profitable to the department and a great boon to the public. Proposed by Mr Neal and saconded by Mr Ambury: That the train leav ing Waitara at 8,10 a.m. come on to New Plymouth.

Proposed by Mr Green, and seconded by Mr Carter, that a passenger train leave New Plymouth at 6 a.m., arriving at Hawera at 9,30 a.m. That in the opinion of this Association the timo has now arrived when t,ha Fire Insurance Ocmpinies doing business in New Plymouth should reduce the rates by at least 25 per cent,, as thfsa were only lately increased by over that amount, especially by changiyg the chss cf risks from 0 to D. The following are soma reasons why this should be done: (1) The insurers in the business portion of the town keep a nightwatcbman, who inspects the various risks from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m ; (2) That there is fin efficient Fire Brigade with up-to-date appliances, for the suppression of fires, to this insurers contribute ; (3) That there is a good water supply already, but the Borough Council have now on extension scheme in progress, that will give a pressure of 1501b per square inch, making it second to none in the colony; (4) That the losses by fire in New Plymouth for teu or more years has been ridiculously, low in compi.rison with Ihe'premium paid ; that the Fire Insurance Companies be asked to alter the salvage clause, sc. that where an insurance agent orders or sanctions the removal of goods from a building close to where a fire may happeD, and such insured property be damaged by water, removal or theft, then the Insurance Companies interested make the whole of such claim payable by them and not in proportion to amouni insured as at present. That the attention of Companies doing. *n»rine inauranca be called toth>anomuly of rate's now obtained ; for instance while insurance from Londou to New Plymouth, including transhipment from W-'linsr- r, is dons at, 7s 6 i p?r cent, vet l'rom Wcliingfon to New Plymouth the rata charged is 20 par 3Pn f , thus debarring merchants from sfre 'ting insurance from port to port in Now / :, alaal. Messrs Gocmcre, Carter, and Hlyth were appointed a committee to co '

Dperate with aay other committer formed. 11; was decided to forward i copy o ihe foienoiog resolutions to tha Cham aer of Commerce.
