The Daily News NEW RAILWAY TIME-TABLE.

In accordance with his promise Mr S. ! F. Whitcombe, the District Traffic Manager, has forwarded us a copy of the proposed new time-tabie for the Wanganui-New Plymouth section of railway. In sending the time table Mr Whitcombe writes as follows" It is considered di sirable to make alterations in the present train services between New Plymouth and Wanganui to give greater facilities to settlers and others and subjoined is the proposed service. It will right through give an extra passenger train each way between New Plymouth and Wanganui, and some of the trains are slightly altered to give more time to passengers in Wanganui and New Plymouth. You will notice that whereas at present it practically takes a passenger from South of Hawera, wishing to do business at stations north of Hawera, three days; under the proposed time-table a passenger can do his businei s at any station as far north as Stratford, spend 2| hours at Stratford and return home the same day, and at stations between Stratford and N ew Plymouth inclusive do all their business and ipturn home the following day. As before stated mixed trains have been altered to suit connecting trains and to meet other local requirements, A gr,at many suggestions have been received from various piaces, but it is not possible to suit all persons and many of the suggestions are impracticable. It is out of the question to give a fas j service io addition to the ma 1 train between Wanganui and N*w Pymoutb, enab- . ling passengers to leave Wangar,ui in : the morning, do business in Nmv Ply 1 moutib, and Return home the sains day. To be of any practical usa such a train would have to stop at all stations, and 1 consequently to perfo:m tha jou my 1 jin the required time, tr'avt-1 at a rate ' of speed far beyond the limits of safety. 1 The time-table ppt befcre you has been' framed wiih a view to'tuoet, as for ae-i i! practical, all reasonable requirements,' ( It is proposed to give it a trial for tl ei y neixt siz: months, commencing on the f Ist December, ft my be of interest f to you to 'know that the proposed alter-at-jop and additions will .cost the Ds-1' 1 9yep .416,900 a year, I

C.T 3!oSo ? We deiire of all to thank M> Whitcombe far liis courtesy in seodinf; is a copy of the above table, anil would just Pay right liore that it fulfils lh' ocpßctations wg formod some time ago, ind of which wo warned our readers, tud is not at all sat isfactory to this end if tha section. We urged, when referring to the qu9s« ion some monthback, that there was a very great risk of New Plymouth interests beinp neglected and VVanganui interests promoted, Without any desire to find fault or take anything from Wangauui, we desire to point out that our fears have bon realised. Practically no improvement has been made at this end, indeed, it is made worse (because delaying the evening train from New Plymouth till 5.25 o'clock is simply ab-urd), while the timetable sou'h of Stratford is considerably improved. Ho additional facilities have been provided for settlers to do business with New Plymouth, whila the facilities south of S-, rat ford havj bean enormously improved and increased. Then in th* question of spend, it will be seen that a train leaves VVanganui for Hawera at 5.10 p.m. and, although the grades between those two towtis are the worst' ia the colony, the 60 miles is run in 3 hours and 45 minutes, whila a train leaving Hawera for New Plymouth nt 6.15 p.m., although the line is. nearly level and the dis'ance only 48 miles, takes 3 hours and 40 minutes. The train leaving New Plymouth at 1,20 also takes 3 hours and 30 minutes to run to Hawera. Will the same train on leaving Hawera have its spaed so iccelerated so that she reaches Wan»anui in 3 hours and 40 minute?, or only tan minutes longer, notwithstanding the longer distance ind heavy grades. Then again, th' first traiD in fiom Hawera in the morning is timed to Teach Wanganui at 11.12 a.m. instead of 11,22, or 10 minutes earlier than now, while the repeated representations of the people to get the first morning train to reach Naw Plymouth earlbr are ignored, as ■is the question of running the Waitar* —Sentry Hill train kifco town ia the morning, although this would be a very great boon. Spaco will not allow of our exhausting dl the obj c ions to the aew time-tablp, but wo hope no time will he lost in making an t ffnt to ge" this end of the dis'iict mora fairly treated.
