DUNEDIN HARBOUR.
PKK PKZSS ASSOCIATION. Dunedin, October 16. A gathering took place to-day of members of the Chamber of Commerce and the Otago Harbour Board to congratulate Cf.ptftin Baxter on Lis enterprise in bringing up the upper harbour channel and berthicg at the wharf the Somerset, the largest cargo steamer "»hich has ever negotiated the "Victoria Channel. Captain Baxter was presented with two Mosgiel rugs. In replying, Captain Baxter made it clear that there was no difficulty in bringing the steamer up. Reference was made to the difficulty of inducing companies trading regularly to the port to bring cargo boats to load at the Dunedin wharves. [The Somerset is a vessel of 7010 tons Dunedin has spent many thousands of pounds to bring these steamers right up to Dunedin, although Port Chalmers with its wharves, docks, etc., >8 connected by rail with the city. Yet in Taranaki Mr Maxwell apd his friends consider a port 250 miles away is good enough for Taranaki.—Ed.]
