A NEW COLONY.
Per Press Association. Received 16, 0.27 a.m. London, October 15. The Seychelles Islands have been mode a separate colony, [These Inlands, which lie about 4 d-yrees sonth of 'ha Equator, numberaltogether 74. They were originally discovered by the Portuguese, and were' occupied by the French about 1742,. but captured in 1794 and finally assigned to Britain in 1814, The population at the end of 1900 wm 20,275, the total area of the islands being 148£ square miles. They were praotically made independent of Mauritius in 1897. The capital and seat of Go- | vernment is Victoria, 'which has so excellent harbour, constantly visited by men-of-war, having recently been mtdf a ooaliog station by the Admiralty. Up till now the Government has been vested in an Administrator, assisted by an Executive Council and • Lsgiala* tive Council, the Administrator Mag president of both Oouncils. One of the chief exports in vanilla, while at Mab6 are found gigantio land tortoises and double coooa nuts. The Maeaagtriee Maritimes and British Indk ODmpaniw run steamers to thet islands.
