THE BRITISH CABINET.
PBBSS COMMENTS ON THB fcITUATIOH. FIB PRESS ASSOCIATION. Lohdok, October 6. The Standard says the Duke of Devonshire's resignation is a severe i blow to the Government, already sha - ken to its foundations. It considers the reconstruction is inadtq ia-e and canses wonder whether Mr Balfour will meet Parliament. The Hon. A. Lytfelton's appointment causes blank amazement. From Chamberlain to -Lyttelton is a stroke of fantastic irony. The Times says: "The Duka of Devonshire's retirement will exwrci*. no little influence on the approaching struggle." The Daily Express remarks: "Mr Lyt'leion is an ideal choice. The Duk* of Devonshire's action is mast extraordinary." The Daily Mail stys: "Mr Balfour presides over si Cabinet of stop-gaps. His letter is most spiteful and petulant."
The Chronicle and Daily News opine that the Ministry is doomed, while the Daily Telegraph says that the appointments will immeasurably strengthen Mr Balfour's hold upon the country, which will heartily welcome Mr Lytteltoo. The Morning Post thinks Mr Balfour is wise to rely on young colleagues.
