BOROUGH COUNCIL.

At the meeting of the Council this evening tha following reports will be considered :

The Works Committee report recommending: That the Henui Road Board be informed that the Council cannot agree to their suggestion that tho Council should form and metal the old Devon-road full width in settlement of all future claims for extraordinary traffic, but is willing to pay a reasonable annual Bum towards the upkeep of the roud; that no charge be made for inspection and certificate (re fire escapes) under section 318 of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1900; that notice to fence with 7ft iron fence be given to owners of lands adjoining the East End fire station; that all Borough workmen after Ist Ojtobar next be required to send' in weekly time sheets; tbat the application of Mr A. U. Case, turncock's assistant, to be placed on the permanent s";&fl be granted; that a temporary water service be granted to Mr M. .Tones in King-street pending the formation cf this street; that Mr Fookes' application for grading and installing of Oamernn-street he deferred until the committee have an opportunity of visiting the street; that Mr T. P. L'stet's letter re turnstiles in Downestreet be referred to the Engineer to report upon; that the New Zealand Cement Company be informed that the Council not, having storage, room rjgret being unable to receive the. cement mentioned in the company's letter; that Mr Armstrong's letter re Eiplanvie contrsct b'3 received ; that the application of Messrs C. T. Mills and G, H. McGtahfly for water service in Brougham-street be granted and the Engineer be instructed to gei the work done; thit the Council accept Mr; Weston's offer to sell part section 13, Storehouse Reserve, for the sum of £2OOO (septic tank site); that MrT. W, Fischer's application for levels in L9ach-street be deferred until the committee have visited ths locality; that H's Worship the Mayor, Ore. Bellringer and Wood, be a committee to report upon Mr Hood's claim for compensation for encroachment by the vtangotuku etream ; that Messrs Boon Bros, tender of .£236 for Waterworks cottage be accepted—(others tender P. Ross £240, Cliff Bros. £241, Coleman and Son £248 10s; that Mr W. Moon be appointed to the pjsiton of concrete worker as from Ist October (four other applicants) ; that provided he is satisfi d there is sufficient work to keep two fully employed, the Borough Engineer hj» authorised to secure the services of Mr Bercatson to assist in concrete woik at 10s per day ; tbat Mr W. H Jury's quotation for gig hire at 7s 6d per day being the lowest be accepted—(two other tenders); fck'it Mr W. Sheffild's claim for com pansation for alloged encroachment at Standish's Hill be referred to the Borough Solicitors to advise upon ; that Mr H, Trimble, in answer to inquiry, be informed tbat the Oounoil is willing to sell Borough debentures; that the Borough Engineer be authorised to obtain quotation for a bell tower for the East Fire Station from Messrs Booth, McDonald and Co.; that the Borough Engineer obtain quotations for a boiler for the Abattoir; that, in reply to Mr ELutchen's application on behalf of a olieat for permission to add a second storey and to extend the present building on section 644, in Eg-mont-street, without a brick wall, he be informed tint on receipt of plans and specifications the Council is pre pared to give the matter favourable consideration; that the Borough Engineer be instructed to report on a refuse destruoter; that notice be given to the owners of sections 295 and 227, Pow-derham-street, that if the furze encroaching on the street be not ciit forthwith, the Council will do the work and recover the cost from the owners ; h<tt His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Oollis and Wood ba a commitree to interview the Eliob Road Board and Franklby Road Board regarding work proposed to be done at Wallace Place ; ;hat in reply to a request for repairs ac the corner of King and Queeu-siraets, Mr. Todd bo informed that King-street will b8 shortly graded and the work then attended to; that the Borough Engineer's report as to the work to bb gone on wi h duiing the next fortnight by the Borough foreman and staff, he confirmed ; that Mr, W, Q, Ifnyvet't be informed that unless he signs his contract for Broughan-street extension within 24 hours, his deposit will be forfeited ; that the Borough Engineer be authorised to hire whatever horses and drays that may he required from time to time; that the following clause be added to the conditions for appointment of Borough Turncock, " That the successful applicant must pass as a licensed plumber within 12 months from date of appointment; that consideration of the report of the Sanitary Inspector recommending the removal of the rubbish depot to a portion of the Abattoir Reserve be deferred; tbat the quegion of a n,ew water cart be d,e ferred.
