PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. Melbourne, September 26. A deputation, representing 40 social and political societies waited on Si. W. J. Lyne urging the total prohibition of opium to be used for em -kiog, and Bur W. J. Lyne replied he had no power under the Customs Act, which recognised opium by placing a duty tanging from 30s to 60s par pound on it. He would, however, consult his colleagues with reference to passing legislation. New South Wales imported in 1901 28,7541bs of opium, Victoria 7,72sibs,Queensland 16,7841b5, and other States small quantities. Mr Deakin has received a great many congratulations, including messages from Canada and England.
It is understood the Bouus Commission on the casting vote of Mr Kingston approve paying a bonus to develop the iron industry. Mr Watson, the Labour leader, and other members present a minority report urging that a 10 to 15 per cent duty will suffice to establish the industry.

Sydney, September 17. There has been a strong southerly gale with heavy rain all day, and it continues unabated. The rain is general, and is very heavy in the northera districts, eight inches being recorded at Raymond Terrace. The river Hunter is rising rapidly, and the lowlands are already flooded. The settlers are removing their stock, and the storekeepers their goods in anticipation of a high flood. Received 28,0.66 tun.
