TOWN DRAINAGE SCHEME.
SEPTIC TANKS OH 'HUKCr OOTFALL. MR MESTAYBR'S OPINION INVITED. At the Borough Council on Monday the committee. appointed to interview Dr. Y.ilintine, regarding matters ; connected with the eep ic tank, reported that a was held with Dr. Valintine, when he agreed to the septic tank being dispensed with and the sewerage discharged direct to sea at , low water murk, provided th* Council laid the sewerage pipes as for a septic tanks on the banks of the Huatuki and 'gave an undertaking to immediately ! erect tanks if the Health Depirtment | considered it necessary, j On the motion to adopt the report Or. Be'lringer moved as an amendment—" That in view of the difficulty that has arisen re septic tanks Mr Mfistayec, C.E., Consulting Engineer to the Council, be requested to vi*it New Plymouth to advise as to the practibility of dealing with the sewage by septic tanks erected at the Henui, or neir the rubbish dtp it, and to report generally on the matter." He considered it was practicable to deal with the sewage at the £ ist End and that a tunnel cou'd ba taken from Gover-street to the rubbish depot and thence to the cliffs. He was satisfied that the matter should be carefully gone into and in the interest of the town he considered there should be septia tanks. In reply to Or. Alexander the Engineer said there would be sufficient fall to get rid of the sewage, hut he doubted whether there was sufficient to allow of a septic tank, j Or. Brooking seconded the amendment, as he considered that if a serious change in the drainaga system was contemplated it was absolutely necessary to get Mr M&stayer to come up and go over the question. He was inclined to think the sewage might be disposed of in two or three seotioos. The Mayor pointed out that Taranaki was youog as compared with Auckland and thq other large cities, which had for years emptied their sewage direos into the sea, Such a course would save thousands of pounds. Be considered the sst of the tide was northwards so that no offence would be ciU9cd t3 the inhabitants of the town. Cr. Collis was willing to abide by Mr Mestayer's opinion. The amendment was then oarried.
