Cruciform was allotted 10.2 in the Squatter's Handicap, The Telegraph says Mr Stead must have bsen a proud man to see his colour* so generously received on Saturday. Two of the best mares in the Southern Hemisphere proved a contest worthy of their great reputation. After a magnificent struggle, during which the excitement was probably roused, higher than ever before here, Cruciform got the judge's verdict by a hoad. Then the excitement burst the bond* The crowd broke into loud and prolonged cheering. Volume after volume was given Oruoiform and her owner. Cruciform was not the favourite, so th* compliment paid to Mr Stead was still more flattering and genuine. Wakeful was not forgotten, for she only *u> 1 oumbed after a game struggle, but the exouses made for her defeat wen not really admitted. The Herald says the interest surrounding the Derby and Epsom was naturally keen, but it remained for th» meeting of Wakeful and Cruciform to rouse the spectators to the highestpitoh of excitement, and when, after a magnificent struggle, which will long live in the memories of those privileged to. witness it, the New Zealand representative gained the honours by jfcfr 1 very narrowest of margins. Then followed a most remarkable demonstration, whioh formed not only an expression of general admiration for Urusiform's sterling but a tribute to the honour of a true sportei man in the person of Mr Stead. The> i Tod Sloan style of riding adopted by i Hewitt, though not attractive, appear* , very effeotive; but for his tuperb homei manship, p<rticularly when Wakeful i drew atangbidd Oruoiform, the position* ■ would probably have been reversed.
