COUNCIL OF THE CHURCHES.
A well-attended meeting of the Council of the Churches nas held on Wednesday evening, and a considerable amount of business of an important nature transacted. A resolution was carried that this ,Council eirong'y deprecates the employment of haimaids in the public hotels 'of ihe colony, and urges such amendment of the L-'censiug Act as will make illegal the continuanca of this undesirable employment for women and girls. The Council also expressed their appreciation of the action of the Mayor and members cf the Borough Council in closing billiard-rooms at 10 o'clock. Great pleasure was also expressed at the decision of the students of the Australasian Students Association to hold their Summer School in New Plymouth, and promising to do all in their poner to make the school a success. The Rev. F. A. Bennett was requested to make suitable arrangements for their reception.
