LITERARY AND DEBATING SOCIETY.
There was a good attendance at the New Plymouth Literary and Debating Society's meeting on Tuesday evening to hear an address by the Rev. P. A. Bennett, on " The Future of the Maori Race." Mr Bennett, after touching upon the most probable origin and early history of tbe Maori, went more fully into the causes that led up to Maori rebellion and disaffection, and dwelt particularly upon tbe efforts that are now being put forth for tbe moral, intellectual and physical uplifting of the race. His address was exceedingly interesting and was followed with the closest attention by all At the conclusion a very hearty' Vote of t thanks was accorded to the Rev. Gentleman on the motion of Mr Goodacre, seconded by Mr Green, whose remarks were highly appreciative. At the c inclusion of the meeting the members bade formal farewell to Mr Holloway (who has occupied the position of Premier since the formation of the Parliamentary pnion). Mr White (on behalf of the Ministry) and Mr Goodacre (for the " Opposition ") referred to Mr Holloway's energetic leadership and wished him every success in his new aphere. Several other members took occasion to exprefs their appreciation of the continued efforts of Mr Holloway on behalf of the Society ever since it started, he having spared no pairs or trouble to assist in making both branches of the Society a success, and joined in the wishes for his welfare. Mr Holloway, in a few well chosen remarks, replied, thanking those present for their good wishes and kindly remarks, and hoped the Society would continue, and have a prosperous future.
