A BIG SCHEME.
The Tamaki-Manukau canal, which is to confer such benefits on the coaetnl trade of the North Island and on the colony generally, is not appreciably nearer to State aid, judging by tbe reply of the Minister for Public Works to Mr Kirkbride. The member for Manukau said there was only about half a mile of swampy land between the Tamaki and the Upper waters of tbe Manukau. He asked if the Department would report on the cost. The Minister said the officers of the Department were too busy for one of them to be devoted to this work just | now. Some time ago the estimate of I the coat was something like threequarters of a million, but it depended on the size of boats to be admitted, It would come in time, but he doubted if i that time had come yet.
