SEVERE ERUPTIOV OF WAIMUNGO GKY3KR. FOUR PERSONS SWEPT INTO THE BOILING WATER. PBB FBXSB ASSOOUTIOJr, Auckland, August 30. A shocking catastrophe is reported j from Rotorua. An unusually severe eruption of the Waimungu geyser took place this afternoon, resulting in the death of Misses Nicholls (North Canterbury) and Messrs McNaughton (Ponßonby) and Joe Warbrick, brother of the well-known guide. They were looking at an eruption near the shelter shed, standing on a hill overlooking tbe geyser, and went too near in the desire to take snap shofce. The eruption took the form of a tidil wave, becoming suddenly terrific, and the four paople n-med were swep: off the hill by the forca of the water into the overfljw of the geyser, where there is a depth of 12 feat. They were carried down into the boiling water, nearly a mile towards Lake Ro omahana, the bodies being recovered some time after, a considerable portion of the clothing baing torn off. | Mrs NicholU accompanied her daughters, but escaped. Another man in close proximity succeeded in resisting the force of the water.
