FOOTBALL.
NORTH v. SOUTH ISLAND. A WIN FOR THB SOUTH. FBB PEESS ASSOCIATION. Auckland, August 26, The North v. South Island football match was played here to-day in fine weather, and in the presence of about 8,000 spectators. The game was not particularly interesting, and by no means brilliant beyond a flash here and tbere. The first spoil closed in favour of North by 9 points to 3, but in the second half the Southern backs got in some fine work, and added three more tries, thus winning by 12 points to 5, Wilson scored a try for the North, which was converted by Kieraan, while for the South tries were scored by Scott, Wood, Stead, and McGregor.
TARANAKI V. MANAWATO. ANOTHER WIN FOR TARANAKI. Palsiebston Nobth, August 26. The Taranaki Representatives defeated Manawatu to-day by 7 points (a goal from a mark and an unconverted try) to 3(a try). From a scientific point; of view the display was somewhat disappointing, although the teams were very evenly matched. There was a good deal of rough play and one man on each side had to retire.
HAWKE'3 BAT V. SOUTHLAND. Inyebcabgill, August 26. The match between Hawke's Bay and Southland was played to-day under execrable conditions, and had it bean possible it would have been postponed. The visitors played very well indeed and bad hard luck in not scoring in the second spell. Bain had fallen for 24 hours and continued throughout the match, the ground being dotted with small lagoocs. The local men won largely because they were in their native element, and the game ended ; Southland 14, Hawke's Bay 0.
