NEW PLYMOUTH HARBOUR EMPOWERING BILL.

'OPPONENTS WAIT OM THE PREMIER. j On Thursday a deputation consisting •of Mpasrs Maxwell, Hire, Hornby, . and McLem interviewed tha Premier 'and kid before him the objections to ! the above Bill. Messrs E. M. Smith, Major, and Jenninge, M's.H.R. were present. Mr Maxwell was spokesman, and adduced his ofc-repeated statements. In tbe coarse of his remarks he was interrupted by tha Premier, who eaid he declined to waete time in considering a marine engineering scheme, which was a question for experts. What he wanted to koow was the line of demarcation batwsen those absut New Plymouth, who snpported the scheme, and thjse outside who did not. Mr E. M. Smith poiu f ed out that the Bill provided for the scheme being submitted to and voted upon by the ratepayers, and emphasized the fact that there were only 800 votes in New Plymouth aa against 6000 in the other parts of the district. The Premier said that as to local Bills wou'd be considered for three weeks there would ba plenty of time to make the provisions of the Harbour Bill known. He hr-d alreadyadvisfd a deputation of supporters of tin Bill thit they should tako a vote of the ratepayers to ascertain if the people wanted the proposal carried out.
