There was floe weather and a large attendance to witness the match Nt- w Z alanders versus Northern Districts. The match was excellent as practise for the v'sitors, but the Northern team *as a weak one, the spectators being treated to a runaway game. Kiernan, who was particularly smart in g9tting the bsll thioughout the gam* passed to Wood, thence it went co Stead and R. McGregor, tha latter scoring, and Wallace again converting. New Zealand .. .. 10 Northern Disfcriots .. 0
Wood, who was feeling the efl'-c's of an old injury, was not playing well, The local men failed to stop the persistent rushes of the visitors, and a fiue passing rush by Wood, McGregor, Stalker and Kiernan resulted in the last named crossing the line, but Wallace failed.
Almost immediately Nicholson got possession and the ball was passed to McGregor, Wood and Asher, who scored, but Wallace again failed. Just before half time Nicholson scored an easy try, which Wallace converted. , New Zealand .; .. St Western Distritts .. 0

Stead and Kiernan were playing a fine game, and in a pretty piece of p'ssing between Stead, R. McGregor, and Asher, tbe latter created a sensation by jumpiog clean over the hack and scoring, Wallace placing a goal; Gallagher} Cooke, Asher (twice), D. McGregor and Kiernan obtained tries in quick suoceeeion, but ia every instance Wallace failed at goal. The inter-island football will be played at Auckland on August 26tli. The South Island selectors have chosen the team as follows (one front ranker short) Full, S. Turtill; three-quarters, D. McGregor, Stead, Stalker; five-eighths, Duncan, Wood'; half, HarVey; forwards, Mckie, Fanning, Cooke, Given, Dennehy, Scott, Porteous; emergency, Back, Smith, Nelson.
In regard to the North Island team a complete forward team can bo got from the team now in Australia. The certainties in the backs are Kiernan (half), Asher and Wilson (Wellington) three-quarters. The positions of some other certainties are not decided on. WAIRAKA.PA v. SOUTHLAND. Jnvercakqill, August 11. This match was won by Southland by 14 (3 tries and a goal) to 3 (penalty goal). The ground was greisy in parts. While the ball was among the forwards the visitors held their own and in the foot work were superior to the locjl men, but in back play the northerneis wore Quickened.
