NORTH v. SOUTH. | There was a fairly good attendance at tha Recreation Grounds on Thursday afternoon to witness the contest between teams representing North and South Taranaki. As the rep. team was to be S3lected from the players it was anticipated that they would be doing their best, and in spite of the muddy ground and greasy ball the m mbers of the te.tms certainly played a very willing game, and with a few exceptions the pl-iy was fairly good. In the first spell the play was very even. The Northern team pressed for a time, but the South were the first to sc3re, as from a loose kick out Forsyth was enabled to secure a try, the effort to convert, however, proved abortive. South .. .. .. 3 North 0
Play was again fairly even until, owing to a mistake by Mynott, the Southeners added to their score. South 8 North .. .. .. 0
The second spell opened with some very good play by the Sou'h, who tried to make the play more open, A good passing run through the South 25'g ended in Oallender securing a try at the corner, but Allen failed Co convert. South ~ ~ .. 8 North 3
On resuming, play became very mixed, the Northerners eventually working down again in the South's territory. Mynott made a break away from the centre, which ended in Alle* getting over the line in a very exposition behind the posts, and securing the major points, making the score even.
South North
Phy now became fierce on both! sides, and eventually from a very loose rush A, Hunter ran down and just managed to score a try. The effort to convert failed. South .. .. ..11 North .. ~ .. 8 No further score was mode, South thus winning by three points. The Southern forwards were very strong and at times seemed to get the advantage of tha Northern backs, but the latter played up well, It is not often that an omergenoy man distinguishes himself like "Hippo" Smith did during the wholn gama. He was always always at hand and played right up to rop. form. Mr Griffiths prjved a satisfactory referee. Mr Syme, the selector of the Rpp. team, was present, and it is understood he will make known bis choicj this morning.
