Accokdihq to the Eawtra Star, abouti 50 persons attended the meeting called by Messrs Maxwell and McLean, to discuss the harbour extension proposals. After both gentlemen had given their views strongly opposing any extension, the Chairman, Mr Blair, said there were four positions which could be taken up—favour the loan, which he did not think he would; oppose it; suggest differential rating; or cut out the rating area altogether, (Loud applause). Mr W. Williams moved, That this meeting opposu the raising of a loan for any further extension of the New Plymouth harbour, Mr Powdrall, in seconding, said the Kaupokonui factory saved XSOO in fifteen months in port charges. New Plymouth was not our harbour, and was not likely to be. The motion was carried unanimously. Mr T. Hurley moved, That Messrs McLaan and Bridge be appointed delegates to go to Wellington with other delegates. Seconded by Mr Williams, and carried. Mr McLean said he bad seen Mr Major, and told him that if he was asleeD when the Bill was brought up in the House, he need never show bis face here again. Mr Major said he bad been interviewed by Sir A. J. Cad man and Mr King, asking him to support the Bill. They need not fear that the matter would be brought on without their knowiDg. Mr Bridge said he would Jike to withdraw from the deputation in favour of Mr Hornby. This was agreed to. It was resolved that a branch of the Harbour Ratepayers' Defence League be formed, the subscription being 5 per ceut. on the actual rate paid annually by each ratepayer. On the motion of Messrs Bridge and Sailers, it was decided to appoint can-1 vasser's for? each school district to get signatures for the petition, A strong committee was formed to carry out the wishes of the meeting. On the motion of Mr Hornby, a vote of thanks was accorded Messrs Maxwell and McLean, and a similar vote to the chair terminated the proceedings.
