Mr E. Maxwell has written to the Chairman of the Waitara Town Board stating that he intends to do all in his power to show the ratepayerr of the New Plymouth Harbour rating district that the proposal to raise an additional loan for breakwater extension is against their interest. The lnglowood Record reports that a local butcher had in his fhop on Thursday the carcase of a four-tooth ewe, bred and fattened by the Waihi natives, turning the scale at 1811b as it hung in the shop. In resf onse to representations made by the Mayor, Mr R. Cock, on behalf of a number of tradesmen in town, the Government has agreed to declare Thursday, 16th insb., a holiday for Government offices for the observance of Arbor Day, instead of Wednesday, 15th inst. As showing how plentiful hawks are in the district just at present, we are informed that Mr H. Kennedy, of Dud.ey road, has trapped no less a number tnan 18 of these birds during the last three weeks.—lnglewood Record. Mr James Kowin arrived at Hawera on Wednesday, and was promptly interviewed on the dairy question by a Star reporter. In regard to the coming season, Mr Kowin thinks it is early to speak with confidence. It is scarcely to be expected that for cheese the high market of last season will recur; and no doubt there is at present a superabundance of butter, but it does not follow that that will be the position when our export season begins. Though it would be a drawback to have stored butter which cannot possibly be so good as the freshly made article going on the market at the opening of the season, still, he hopes circumstances wiil minimise that, and does not thing that thp outlook is so gloomy as some people profess to thitik it. Possibly those who consign will get as good average results as iti past years. At the Cape he found business very dull, owing to heavy storage and heavy demand. He has no confidence of an immediate improvement there, though ha was informed by those on the spot that matters will resume their normal level in six or seven months time. Sir J. G. Ward is considering improvements in the telephone system by the installation of metallic oirsuits, which will have the effect of rendering oonver sation clearer, and the installation of the central battery system. Under tbe latter system there will be no battery required at each place where the telephone is fitted up. The present method of ringing up will be done away with, and only a bell will be attached besides the receiver. The lifting of the receiver from the hook will indicate to the girl at the bureau that her services are required, and when the i-eceiyer is restored to the hook, the bureau will know that the conversation is finished. Thus the ring up and ring off operation at present in vogue will be done away with, j
