FEB PRESS ASSOCIATXOH. WANOurct, July 8. In the match between Manawatu and Wanganui, played yesterday afternoon, Manawatu won by four points to three. Manawatu was much superior in the first spell, but in the second spell WaDgtnui had matters muoh their own way, and had hard lack several times in not scoring. Wellington, July 5. The Wellington and Manawatu junior represcnat.iv.-s teams pl>yed a drawn game. Tbe match was rather disappointing. Attempts at back play were not numerous, and when they wpre mide tho reiule was poor. Though the forward* played a good gtme throughout their efforts were largely discouotid by frequent wild efforts to scare at inopportune no* ments. Each side scored a try. j
BEFSRKES' ABSOOUTIOM. OF AUTHORITIW. The ordinuy meeting of the Tare* naki Referees' Association was held on Friday night, but owing to the eaoretary being unable to be present the meeting was adjourned till Saturday evening, when there were present:— Messrs Procter, Hopkins, Griffiths, Petty, and Bellringer (hon. seere'ary.) Mr Grim hs w»s voted to the chair. Correspondence was read from the secretary to the secretary of the Rugby,. Union and Mr Spurdle, enquiring who had appointed the referee in the StarHawera play-off, and Mr Spurdle'a re* ply was read stating that the Rugby Union had made the appointment. Rule 18, relating to Cup contest*, was read, which states that referees for all inter-olub matches shall be appointed by the Taranaki Referees' Association, provided such appointment meets with the approval of the management oommittee of the Rugby Union. Considerable discussion took plaoe over the action of the Union, and it was deoided to appoint Mr Petty to referee in tbe match, and to forward his name to the Union for their approval. It was also decided to draw the at-' tention of tbe Union to the rule regulating the appointment of referees. Notice of motion was given that * new bye-law be made: "That any referee betting on the result of any match, or being under the influence of liquor whilst in obarge of a match, will be expelled from the Association."
Stratford's second juniors being rietorioua in the northern division, with Hawera in the southern part of the district, the Taranaki Rugby Un'on has fixed the p'ay off matches. The first will be played at Hawera on the 9th instant, and the second at Stratford on July 16tb, the third match, if r.eoesaary, will be tossed for, Mr Powdrell I wilt ref»ree in the first match, and Mr Hopkins in the second. i The following players will represent I Ihe Drivers v. On Saturday the Fitzroy school boys played a town toim selected by Qullliam. The embryo Waikatos defeated the town team by 7to nil. Eric Bellringer held the whistle.
