The Daily News. MONDAY, MAY 18, 1903. COLLAPSE OF THE STRIKE.
The news of the ead of the ill-advisad strike in Victoria has been received everywhfre with gladces?. This s'rike was not oiie between capital and labour, | but w&s'a struggle between the heads of the labour unions and tbe Government. The issue was really whether !the Government should mlo cr the [Labour Council. This largely alienated j public support and sympathy, becau e it was felt thaf the success of the strike would be a fatal blow to the nationalsation of tbe rail ways and o'.hcr branches of the public service. Tint thestrike was ii'l-advised all willagre", and the action I of the leaders of the movement in orderin 4 the strike on the eva of the assetnb!i i" of Parliament, the only arbiter in such a case, was a further b'under. We hop?, in the hour of victory, the Government, while dealing in the manner they deserve with the organisers of this suicid il act, will temper ju.-fcio with mercy in the cas9 of the rank and fiie who have been so grossly misled throughout this unforiunate affair.
