ANNUAL RAILWAY RETURNS.
Some detaite of the working of the New Zealand Government railways for the year ended 31st March appear in the Gazette thia year in connection with the returns for the concluding fourweekly period of the year, There were 2291 miles open for traffic, fifty-six more than in the previous year, and tho revenue tota'led .£1,974,037 (of which the North Island' contributed £788,557), an increase for the whole colony of nearly £IOO,OOO. The expenditure reached £1,343,415, an increase on tbo previous year's of some £91,000. Tho percentage of reveuuo in 1901-2 was 66 80, and last year 68 05, More than seven and a half i million passengois weo carried (an increase of nearly a quarter of a million), exclusive of 118,431 season ticktt holders (17,653 more than bst yea>). The only decrease was one of 97,920 j second claes pissoogrrs.
