The Daily News. WEDNESDAY, MAY 6, 1903 THE FISHING INDUSTRY.

We have repeatedly called attention to the value cf the fishing industry and urged the formation of a small company to fetablish fish curing works at the breakwater and procure a s 4 eam trawler to sys'ematically work the excel'ent fbbing ground known to exist between Cape Egmont and Kawhia. With the splendid means of distribution we have in the railway, with a population.of fully 50,000 p ople who are dependent on dealers for any fish they consume, the prosparity of the industry, if properly minaged, is assured. In the evd>nt of trade bsing opecel up wi'h Sydney a first-cla«s market exists there for a large quantity cf fish. We are told we have nothing to export, but we feel sure onco the service was s'arted -traife would soon spring up, and in fish alor e several tons a wtek would find its way there if proper facilities were provided. As regards the possibftiy of developing 'he fishing industry, a recent issue of the Wellington l'ost says : - " No fewer than twenty-nine boats, including seven oil kunchts, are engaged in the Shin" industry in and about the F.ench Pass. About seventy-five men find employment there. The Nelaon Mailsiys that there is an abundance of fish obtainable in the French Pass, but at present fishing can only be canied on for a short time before the arrival of a passing steamer, and in* cases of disappointment in this direction the hauls are frequently wasted and thrown iverboard. With proper facilities for export, there is profit in the bus : ness, and the U6e of oil-engined boats is proving a great advantage and c?n venience. In one case recently the men engaged took, in four excursions,] and shipped to Wellington within a fortnight fish which netted £l4 peri man."
