MUNICIPAL ELECTION.
TO TBS KDITOK. J Bib, —It moat be evident to any observant mind that the City Council election to be held on the 29 h inst. must have far-reaching eScots upon the' future of this so-called "Garden of i New Zealand." It is interesting to note that the Eerald in dißc»ss'r g tbe ! question shone itsu ; u :lbiis atd allows its columns to be used fcr the publioa-1 tion of letters which, to any thoughtful person, appear unworthy of a place in { a respectable newspaper. Return n! progressive Mayor is the cry of tbe Tory journal, and in doing so seeks to depreciate the present Mayor and eztel the virtues of an aspirant who his twice been signally defeated reminding one of the words in Macbeath: "I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent, but only vaulting ambition, which overleaps itcelfand falls on theotber." Oar worthy Mayor has been subjected to a good deal of hostile criticism, but t his is generally the fate of all public men who endeavour to perform their duties In an honest and impartial manner. There is another point the public would do well to consider, namely, the loan which was authorised during Mr Dcckrill's term of office. It appears to me only right and fair that he should have the opportunity of fulfilling his pledges as to the judicious allccation cf the money.—l am, etc., Householdeb.
