Thb monthly meeting of the Board was held od Wtdi.e Jay. Present: Mr Allsworth (chiirma 1 ;), Mrs Dougherty, Messrs AdUm, McDonald, Wade, Taylor, Mackay, and Fuull. The architect, Mr J. Sanderson, reported that tha Kahui school contract was signed. The for t h Pnniwhakau school had returned th > i plena, and intimated he would wait on | the Board in relation to the contract. He had hald back fab certificate for the balance of the Wairui contract, pending the Board's decision. Repairs at', Ngaire, Te Kere, and Mahoe were comp'eted.—Received. The architect was instructed to call for fresh tenders for painting Awatuna school. Leave of absence was granted Mr Hoi tor, and tbo sympathy of the B >;ird is to be tendered him on account of his accident, with hopes for his speedy recovery. Mies ftfeGill, had been appointed to Carringtonroad, and, after one day there, had been transferred to the Central but had left the distiict shortly after. Hiving received word from the D)that the grant for Kahui would be increased, Mr S'eel's tender had beea accepted. He recommended that out of the JJ43 12s 7d balance of the Stratford District High School funds £4O be divided among the teichers, The assistant insp-otor, Mr Billmtyne, had tiken uphia duties on 7-h March.—Adopted, The question of the Tongaporutu school site was referred to the Re;ervts ' Committee.

An applic <tion by the Waitara Committee for painting the outhouses wag referred to the Architect for his report. Tho head teacher at Midhira 1 ; wrote, urging that the residence should be repaired and put into a sanitary condi tion as the house wh'ch ho rented hnd been sold and he could co longer occupy it.—A copy of the letter is to l)e forwarded to tha Minister with a requeit for a grant for renewing the residence. The Stratford Committee wrote, asking for the appoitatm»nt of a strong as-iatmt capable of taking the work of the Upper Standards, Referred to the chairman and Mr Mackay to report upon.

Mrs McKellar wrote, resigning her position on the Ladis Sewing Committee.—Accepted, and the thanks of the Board to be tendered her for past tervice*. Mr Hill's resignation as teacher at Denbigh Road was accepted as from April 11th. A letter from the Ngariki Committee es to appointment of a teacher was referred to tha ch-iirmin with power to act.

The Department wrote wi h reference to the application for a grant for the erection of a school in the Makihu district, stating it had baen suggested that half-time schools would meet the requirements of the Makahu and Puoiwhiikau districts. A road was being formed up the Ma«gaehu River between Taihore and Makahu Roads. It was suggested that the teacher might live hilf-way between the two plac j p. Tbe Minister would be ghd if the Boird will reconsider the matter from this point of view.

After considerable discussion it was decided that the Minister be informed that the Board in establishing fall or half-time schools always considers the educational requirements of the district.

The Auckland Board wrote stating they had authorisad the establishment of a temporary school at Poro-o-tarao in Mr Harrison's building pending the erection of a school building between Poro-o-tarao and Mang.tpuhi.—To be acknowledged with thanks. The luspentor-General wrote relative to pupil teachers examination and forwarded a-circular which indicated a farther latitude of choice.

The Inspector reported on the matter stating he considered the department's regulit'ons a retrograde aUp as they did not teid to produce good teachers.

Mr Faall gave notice of motion to rescind the resolution of the Board of October 22nd last as to examination of pupil teachers. The Inspector was requested to repirt on the question of Sa'urday classes at the Board's next meeting. Mr Mackay moved that as th<i VVaneanui Board, iu terms of its letter of 20th inst., is willing to co-oper.ite with this Board with a view of urging the Minister to take action during next session to secure by legislation the benefit of the revenues accrued and accruing from the Opaku Reserve, for those in whose interests the reserve was originally set apart, the Chairman and Mr Mackay be "appointed a Committee to draft a circular for submissi in to the local bodies in the original Taranaki district, with the view of enlisting their sympathy in the direction indicated, and submitting the result to the Min'Ver. Mr Mackay briefly referred to the terms of the Act, whi"h set apart the resei vo for the higher education of the children of residents in the Taranaki provincial district, and he urged that it was the bounden duty of the Board to secure this one little ewe lamb for the children in this district, and te prevent the revenue from being davoted to the lirg r area comprised in the Victoria College district. The Chairman said it was agreed on all hands that the scheme settled by the conference, which was held on the subj-ct, whs a very liberal one, and though there were some who wanted the question left, open as to the college, at which the Bchohrsh'ps should be tenabl ',| tha delegates frrm this end considered it best tocoDfine the scholarships to Victoria College. His oxparience was that a cm ill committee was much better able to master thu details of r<-quirements and allooate sums than the whole Biard. Referring to the expenditure at Stratford for sanitary work, he pointed out thit, under the bye-laws in force there, the work was compul ory. Mr Fauli'a report on section 7, block VII., Mimi, and the R.serves Committee's report, was adopted. Le'tera from the Ngaire and Waitara Ooramittees, as to pupil teache.c, were referred to the Chairman.

The question of dealing wifh Mr Turner, as to non-completion ol the W;iitui gchool contract to time, was theo discussed.

The architect explained the position of m 'ttero, pointing out that the contractor had been unable to g-t «ewsoced tittbT when he required it, and recommencing that Mr Turner be not fined. Mrs Dougherty movrd that after considering Mr Turner's lft'er and hearing the urchi'ect's remuks on the •atisfao'o'y wa> in which thi contract had been carried out, that Mr Turner he not fined.

Ths amendment was seconded by Mr Taylor and supported by Messrs Adlam and Wade, The Chairman pointed out that the delr.y had caused no inconvenience, a 1) th ) school was ready before the teacher took charge. He urged that the Board should support the recommendation ol its responsible offioer, the Architect. On a division the amendment was lost on the casting vote of the Chairman, and the motion carried. The question of what course to pursue 68 to the Puniwbakau contract was left in the Chairman's hands witt power to consult the solicitor and tak< ic ion.
